1. my art professor holds that you cannot truly know something until you have drawn it. until you know every intricacy and have let your eyes explore every part. drawing is different than photography because in drawing you are making the rendering. in photography, you have something rendering for you. it makes photography seem like a passive art. and drawing an active art.
however, he went on to explain, that in drawing, you hardly notice light. maybe for shadows, but you can choose the scale of the pencil to make an object stand out. photography requires an artist who recognizes and appreciates the beauty of light.
2. connectedness is an innate human desire. re-reading rob bell's sex god and realizing that the world does not rotate so that people can succeed or be sexual or have money - people do all things essentially to be connected. when we have days where we feel others would wish to not connect with us, or our connections are shallow, we become depressed or blue. we desire to be connected to something in someway for as much of our day as possible.
3. not having a computer makes me a more free person. i have it at work, but that leaves so many hours of reading and cleaning and socializing that normally i would spend surfing the internet or getting ahead or checking my email. eerily, i'm so refreshed and happy my hard drive crashed.
4. calm. listening. understanding. preparation. = better. much better.
